How to Apply Warm Compresses

Warm Compresses

1. Stand or sit comfortably at the sink. Soak a washcloth in very warm to hot water but not so hot that it burns. Do not wring it out entirely, lean over the sink and place the warm wet washcloth over your closed eyelids, holding it directly against your eyelashes for 20-30 seconds. It’s okay to apply light massage.

2. Reheat the cloth and reapply it to your closed eyelids for another 20-30 seconds. Repeat 10-15 times two to three times per day. This will soften and loosen scales and debris in the lashes and it helps liquefy the oily secretions from the oil glands in your eyelids. It also helps prevent an overgrowth of bacteria and to reduce or prevent infection and the development of a stye or chalazion, which is an inflamed lump in an eyelid oil gland.

3. After completing the warm compresses, drape the washcloth over your finger and with your eyes closed, gently wipe your lashes for about 10 seconds per eye. Then apply an artificial tear to each eye.

NOTE: Don’t apply compresses in the shower because you won’t be able to get the water hot enough without burning yourself.
