A red eye is a sign that something is wrong. There are many reasons an eye turns red. Some are harmless and cause no concern, others may be self-limiting, and others may be quite serious and vision threatening.
Any red eye should cause concern and prompt evaluation by your ophthalmologist. Urgent care is recommended if there is associated pain or decreased vision.
In addition to the articles in this section, other causes of red eye, such as glaucoma, eye lid disorders and uveitis, are discussed elsewhere in the Patient Education Center. Keep in mind that this website does not provide information on all eye disorders that cause red eye. Please read the disclaimer.
